This image is a single composition I refer to as a still life in motion. Ferns are one of the oldest vascular (circulates water internally)plants on the planet, even older than the cycads. There are 40 species of ferns endemic to the Wet Tropics of North Queensland. Treeferns have a timeless geometric beauty, easily recognised by their never-ending spirals of growth.

Lilly Pilly

Lilly Pilly (Wilsonii, wilsonii subsp) is a small tree which grows to 6m in height & grows in North Queensland lowland to upland rainforest. It produces large pom pom like red flowers & stunning red /pink new growth & 10-16mm edible clusters of white fruits. Interestingly it is the only Australian Lilly Pilly to produce red flowers.

Quandong Song.
Limited edition of 50.
The Blue Quandong (Elaeocarpus grandees) Fruits are 15-25mm in diameter and are a well known bush food. They are the BLUE MUSICAL NOTES which litter the forest floor with their vibrant song. Flying foxes, birds, rats and cassowaries all eat them. They are often found in the big birds scats half digested as blue poo. The blue fruit contains a Hard seed which is often used to make jewellery.

Native Hibiscus.

This Native Hibiscus (Hibiscus tiliaceus) thrives on the high tide mark, especially where there is an influx of fresh and saltwater. Their open-heart shaped leaves grow up to 15 cm in length and the tree can reach 10m in height. Stunning yellow-orange flowers of this species are often seen floating down the mangrove lined rivers of North Queensland and wash up on the beach.

A never-ending shower of Leaves, flowers, wood, and insects drop from the trees and cover the forest floor in a layer of nutrient rich debris.This is then processed and recycled by decomposers; plants, animals and organisms, which playing a leading role in sustaining the highly evolved rich tropical rainforest.

Obnoxious Beauty.

I sculpted the cassowary looking creature with my hands out of some wait-a-while. All the other plants were photographed between the road and rainforest where I often see these big birds. The image is called obnoxious beauty because all the plants in this picture are considered weeds. However many of them offer protection to vulnerable animals like the cassowary and kangaroos.
