FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY & DESIGN
by Australian Artist Gerhard Hillmann
LIMITED EDITIONS, FABRICS & ARTCARDS

It has been a rather busy year here for us in far north Queensland. I continue to create new artworks & develop new fabric designs, while my partner Natasha keeps the business flowing, organising product orders and market stock. I am still working on a childrens book & we are expecting another child in September this year. Our daughter is about to turn 4 & I remember a week before she was  born I wrote the first newsletter, which I never sent out. so you can relax. I wont be filling your email inbox with too many updates. I am aiming for 1 newsletter every 1-3 months max. Regards Gerhard

ARTWORK NEWS
Finch the Thinker is a new photographic artwork I created earlier in the year. It is part of the 2013 series I am currently working on and is a combination of photography, organic photo-montage and environmental sculpture. For a preview of these new images which are all works in progress please click here.

Boyds Forest Dragon (Hypsilurus boydii)

I Photographed this forest dragon one night in a high altitude mabi forest on the Atherton tablelands here in QLD.This dragon is a living dinosaur & endemic to the tropical rainforests of Far North Queensland. They are the only diurnal reptile in the world that does not use sunlight to regulate their temperature, Instead, Body heat is balanced to match the temperature of the occupying vegetation. This neutral heat reading helps them avoid detection from pythons which use their heat-sensing abilities to detect prey. People often see these in the daintree region and on the tablelands. Quite often they hide around the side of the tree hoping you cant see them. A day after this photoshoot I felt rather sick and found 27 ticks on my body which helped explain the headache. However, Being able to see such an amazing primitive creature in its natural environment makes it all worth it. I love the abundance of the tropics but it makes me depressed to think there is only 4% of the original highland mabi forests left & these are in small fragmented isolated patches.

The fabric patch collection on organic cotton continues to grow with almost 200 different designs now available in the regular size 6″ (15cm) size.

We now also have larger designs available 12×12″, 17×17″ & have started experimenting with 35×35″ extra large fabric prints. These are suitable for cushions and features in quilts etc. I have been doing some experiments with panoramic formats and also different fabrics which include heavy cotton twill and silk with promising results.

MARKET NEWS
Winter is a magical time in the tropics as the humidity vanishes and the locals shiver in the shade while visiters swim in the pool. On Saturdays I can be found at the Cairns Esplanade markets which are near the lagoon. And on Sundays I am setup at the famous Port Douglas markets. Easy to find me as I am in the second or middle row, on a corner across from the coconut stall. This year I was fortunate enough to expand into a double sized space under the shade of a beautiful fig tree.
It takes me many hours to setup the gallery space and I need to get up at 3:30 am, but I feel it is worth the effort. Good things take time, at least that is what I keep telling myself.
Please visit me at the markets if you are in the area. In the pic below you see me (gerhard), my little girl minna & pregnant partner Natasha.
